New MAGA online track in International Crime and Justice
The Master of Arts in Global Affairs is accepting applications for our new online track in International Crime and Justice.
Professor Kakar published a new book entitled Human Trafficking
Professor Kakar's book presents historical, global and local perspectives on human trafficking. The book also provides conceptual frameworks and theories for understanding the issue. Domestic and international efforts to combat, control and prevent human trafficking are also explored. Other issues, including protections for victims and technology and trafficking, are also discussed.

Professor Goddard’s published his new book entitled Youth, Community and the Struggle for Social Justice. Professor Kakar’s also published a new book on Human Trafficking.
Professors Kutateladze and Meldrum received funding from MacArthur Foundation
Criminal Justice professors Besiki Kutateladze and Ryan Meldrum received funding from the MacArthur Foundation to study prosecutor decision making.
New BS in Crime Science begins Fall 2018
The new Bachelor of Science in Crime Science will soon be accepting applications for Fall 2018. The BS in Crime Science degree combines forensics and computer science with traditional criminology and criminal justice. The program produces graduates with sophisticated analytical skills needed for the new era of law enforcement within the U.S. and abroad. Classes are available at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and online.

A collection of 14 new studies on self-control appear in volume 56 of the Journal of Criminal Justice, which was guest edited by Dr. Meldrum.

Congratulations to Captain Cosimo Castronovo on his recent graduation from the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. He achieved the yellow brick for completing the grueling Marine Corps “Confidence Run” and the blue brick for swimming over 34 miles.

Dr. Guerette invited to speak at U.S. Attorney General’s Conference
Dr. Guerette invited to speak on two panels at the U.S. Attorney General’s 2018 Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) National Conference on December 5-7, 2018, in Kansas City, Missouri. He will participate on panels covering advanced crime analysis techniques and what works in reducing youth and inner city violence.
Dr. Guerette awarded funding to study human and drug smuggling activities in Northern Africa
Dr. Guerette awarded funding to study human and drug smuggling activities in Northern Africa. The project is in collaboration with Transcrime Joint Research Center on Transnational Crime at the Catholic University of Milan and funded by Philip Morris International (PMI) Impact. The project will commence in May 2019 and will examine specifically the convergence and displacement of smuggling activities.

This report presents the results of 78 interviews and 275 surveys completed with prosecutors in Jacksonville, FL, Chicago, IL, Tampa, FL, and Milwaukee, WI. It is the first in a series of reports of the national project focusing on advancing prosecutorial effectiveness and fairness funded by the MacArthur Foundation.
PhD student Erik Cruz awarded ACJS Doctoral Summit Scholarship
Doctoral student Erik Cruz received the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) Doctoral Summit Scholarship. This scholarship was awarded to 40 advanced doctoral students from accredited PhD programs to participate in the ACJS Doctoral Summit for the 2019 annual meeting. The conference will be held in Baltimore, Maryland from March 26th to March 30th.
